JOB SUMMARY:
Clemson University's Research Computing & Data Engagement (RCDE) Team is looking for an AI/HPC Engineer Research Facilitator to fulfill the following duties:
- Clemson's research support team (Research Computing & Data Engagement - RCDE) seeks an experienced research facilitator to serve within its Advanced Computing and Data Science (ACDS) group.
- The candidate's skill set should include expertise in one or more scientific knowledge domains (eg: mathematics, material science, engineering, bioinformatics, bioengineering, physics, environmental science, etc) with experience in using high performance and/or data intensive computing and/or applied artificial intelligence/machine learning .
- A desire to assist and train faculty and students is essential.
- The incumbent will work as part of the research support team, Clemson IT organization national community of research facilitators and collaborate on solutions that advance research at Clemson.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES:
40% - Essential - Research Support:
Support the wide range of disciplines in the Clemson advanced cyberinfrastructure ecosystem. Support and improve performance of scientific and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) application codes; collaborate with researchers and colleagues at other research centers in applying information technology to research problems. Work with researchers from a variety of disciplines to understand their applications, data and application performance. Assist researchers to leverage the parallel, GPU and DGX architectures of computing resources supported by Clemson University (RCDE group). Assist researchers in finding and/or writing high performance research software, especially for applied AI/ML use cases. Coordinate with cluster administrators concerning the needs of the Clemson research computing community and facilitate user-friendly access to those resources. Respond to reported problems and provide solutions.
25% - Essential - Training & Outreach:
Provide guidance to existing and potential users on how to use the cluster for their research projects through both one-on-one consultations and training sessions, including assistance with code compiling, workflow management, software installation and data management. Facilitate and develop specific training programs aligned to Clemson's advanced cyberinfrastructure resources. Train researchers on parallel and other high performance techniques. Understand and convey current trends in research computing technology to the user community. Write user guides, informational material and other documentation. Work closely with faculty and graduate students to understand their research and their needs, developing solutions and funding strategies; and, actively pursuing infrastructure-related funding opportunities and partnerships. Teach training courses in areas such as Linux, Research Computing, and Data Science.
25% - Essential - Design & Development:
Design and implement controls for/reporting on use of AI credits available to Clemson. Design and implement solutions to support applied AI/ML research, including solutions involving both software and hardware components and different functional and performance requirements. Build tools and support architectures used to facilitate computational workflows and organize experiments in conjunction with best practices. Develop scripts to facilitate cluster and user management and assist the Research Computing & Data Infrastructure (RCDI) team in the creation of cluster related software applications. Develop software for existing and new cluster infrastructure related development projects and provide advanced support for the cluster and other implemented projects.
10% - Essential - Professional Development:
Maintain familiarity with emerging techniques and technologies in research computing. Participate in training, education and development activities to improve knowledge and performance and enhance professional development. Maintain familiarity with AI/ML software and technologies. Attend relevant academic and professional conferences.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or other STEM field.
Work Experience - Experience in automated information or communication system design, installation, operation, repair, sales or marketing. Related experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Education - Doctoral / Professional Degree - Mathematics, Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Computer Science, Applied AI/ML
Work Experience - 3 Years advanced or extensive programming in Python or C/C++, using large-scale HPC clusters and/or analyzing large datasets; experience training and/or using Large Language Models. Familiarity with Linux and HPC.

COMPENSATION INFORMATION
Expected Salary Range: ($ 66,400.00 - $ 119,500.00)
Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL
Normal Operations
Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
